Nowadays, central Puerto Vallarta has an impressive concentration of art galleries. Some of them, especially those in the Zona Romántica, display mostly decorative pieces. But others, chiefly in the Centro neighborhood, contain compelling contemporary works. Many of them draw on local craft traditions but are informed by international art movements and trends.

The owner of this gallery told us that she works almost exclusively with indigenous artists, selling “fair-trade art.” The compact space has an appealing selection of prints and a handful of colorful textiles. But the ceramics — painted, sculpted or both — are the real stars. The works here are contemporary but draw on a deep well of tradition.
