The southwest corner of Australia is noted for its fine wines, eucalyptus forests, surfing beaches and Mediterranean climate. The youngest of Australia’s wine regions — the first vines were planted in 1967 — Margaret River produces bottlings of genuine finesse, which are markedly different from the bolder wines made elsewhere in the country. The town of Margaret River is a three-hour drive south of Perth, 6 miles from the sea. The whole area is reminiscent of the wine country north of San Francisco. An excursion to the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse is strongly recommended.
