Modern and Contemporary Art in Tangier

Contemporary Art Museum - Andrew Harper editor

For centuries, Tangier has inspired writers, artists and musicians. Ibn Battuta, widely considered the world’s first travel writer, was born here in 1304. Since then, the city has played host to a range of creative legends, including Henri Matisse, Mark Twain and Keith Richards. Tangier’s art scene continues to thrive, with architecturally striking museums, creative new galleries and other impressive art spaces.

Contemporary Art Space

Inside the Kasbah Museum you’ll find the Contemporary Art Space, which hosts rotating exhibits of paintings, photography and sculpture. During our visit, we enjoyed a show of Cuban works, including cubist paintings by Wifredo Lam and satirical photos by Adonis Flores that provide an irreverent critique of the military. Next door is the Museum of Mediterranean Cultures, with a dazzling tiled courtyard. Closed Tuesday.
