It may be a sensational view that draws us to a hotel or a unique setting in a repurposed historic building. But invariably, it’s the people who make or break the experience once we’re there. These awards go to those who elevated our stays to another level.

Chef of the Year: Thalia Barrios García

La Cocina de Humo and Levadura de Olla, Oaxaca

Chef Thalia Barrios García, La Cocina de Humo - Orlado

Chef Thalia Barrios García is the mastermind behind two of Oaxaca city’s best restaurants. Michelin-starred Levadura de Olla serves creative dishes inspired by traditional recipes. At La Cocina de Humo, chefs whip up a tasting menu of traditional Oaxacan specialties using only a clay oven. Both restaurants highlight local produce. Though she’s not yet 30 years old, Barrios García has been cooking for two decades, learning from her grandmother in the village of San Mateo Yucutindoo. She is the rising star of Oaxacan cuisine and her restaurants alone are worth the trip to one of Mexico’s most exciting food cities.
