Many of Gstaad’s best restaurants are tucked within upscale hotels. You’ll find a casual pizza spot and a popular Indian restaurant (Mango) on the promenade, but for more high-end menus combined with professional service and elevated ambience, it’s best to dine where wealthy visitors spend the night.
The contemporary Alpina Gstaad, one of our recommended hotels in town, has several appealing restaurants, including Japanese and traditional Swiss options. But chef Martin Göschel presides over two of the property’s standouts: his Michelin-starred namesake and his newest venture, Monti, which opened in late 2024. At Monti, Göschel presents prime meats and fresh fish prepared at your table and designed for sharing. The old-fashioned chalet-style interior features handcarved wooden details and rustic-chic lighting, yet the convivial see-and-be-seen terrace, set amid lush gardens, was clearly the place to be in summer. I selected the beef tenderloin, cut to my preferred size, with a green-peppercorn sauce, while my travel companion opted for the sole meunière, expertly filleted before us. The side dishes of lusciously creamy mashed potatoes, maple-glazed vegetables and garlic-butter spinach were equally delectable. The multitiered cheese cart was tempting, but it was the dessert trolley that shattered our resistance. The extravagant hazelnut-chocolate torte, drizzled with cherry brandy, was worth every calorie.
