While many international fashion houses have closed their stores in Buenos Aires due to trade restrictions and the country’s economic mismanagement, plenty of upscale shopping opportunities still exist. Palermo Soho is the trendiest barrio in Buenos Aires, and just like in its New York namesake, boutiques populate nearly every block. The helpful concierge at Alvear Palace also recommended we visit the Paseo Alcorta mall in Palermo Chico, which houses many of the same stores you’ll find in Palermo Soho, but in one convenient place. The following are a few of our favorite high-end shops in various Buenos Aires neighborhoods.
Arandú Talabartería was exactly the kind of shop we were looking for: a boutique filled with handmade Argentine goods like leather bags, belts and boots made from buffalo, capybara and cowhide, along with soft blankets of sheep and llama wool. Equestrians, hunters and polo players will appreciate the fine accessories that come from a culture with a long tradition of horsemanship.
