Visitors to Montenegro tend to confine themselves to a few spots, notably Kotor, Budva and Perast. That leaves much of the rest of the country free from mass tourism.

However, to reach many of the most interesting places requires navigating narrow mountain roads often flanked by precipitous drops. They’re breathtakingly scenic but also sometimes harrowing. At one point, I banged my car on a boulder while trying to make room for an oncoming vehicle and punctured a tire on our rental.

I felt much more relaxed on our excursions organized by the Andrew Harper Travel Office. Working together with local contacts, our advisor arranged three unforgettable experiences that I wouldn’t have had the connections (or patience) to plan on my own.
