The island of Salina lies approximately 45 miles off the north coast of Sicily, in the volcanic Aeolian archipelago (and is reached by ferry from Milazzo). One of its villages, Pollara, acquired a degree of fame as a location for the 1994 hit movie, “Il Postino” (“The Postman”). Capofaro Locanda & Malvasia, an inn on the wine estate of the Tasca d’Almerita family, offers 27 simple but elegant accommodations in former workers’ cottages.
Now the 19th-century lighthouse itself, from which the property takes its name, has been converted into a new six-room complex, situated atop a 150-foot cliff overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. Chef Ludovico De Vivo conducts cooking classes for those interested to learn about local culinary traditions. The surrounding vineyard produces Malvasia wine, and guests may not only sample the products but also take part in pruning or harvesting should they wish. Other activities include mountain hikes and scuba diving in water of exceptional clarity.
