On our Sea Cloud Spirit voyage, my traveling companion and I had the privilege of exploring five of the eight inhabited Canary Islands. Although we had well over a week to tour the archipelago’s otherworldly volcanic landscapes, ancient forests and charming mountain villages, there was still so much more to see. In addition to returning to the islands we visited, I am keen to discover the three that we didn’t. I’d love to see the endless beaches of Fuerteventura, the wineries of La Palma and the tranquil, undeveloped La Graciosa.
Still, I came away with numerous exciting recommendations in the Canaries. Here are some favorites from the islands we toured, in order from west to east.
Only 8,000 people live on the “forgotten island” of El Hierro, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Agriculture is still the number one industry, and most inhabitants lead simple lives with small fields and animals to tend. There are few hotels on the island and no major landmarks. Before it moved to Greenwich, England, the prime meridian ran through El Hierro.
