While the medinas of Marrakech and Fes may offer more treasures, the one in Tangier is home to a range of delightful shops. We particularly loved the scents and bath products at tiny Maison Boukhari, the handwoven rugs at the mazelike Bleu de Fes and the antique jewelry at Boutique Majid. But our favorite shopping experiences were outside the medina at the chic contemporary boutiques clustered near the entrance to the kasbah.
Just inside the gates of the kasbah, De Velasco is a wonderland of caftans. The ground floor tempts shoppers with bright colors, but the real finds are upstairs, where you’ll find racks of clothes for men and women in rich jewel tones. We admired silk caftans and velvet djellabas (the caftan equivalent for men), along with some Moroccan-influenced Western styles, including jackets and shirts with buttons made of knotted silk. Everything in the store is expertly made — and priced accordingly. The high-quality garments here cost about 50 times more than the synthetic stuff you’ll find in the medina.

Creative and colorful clothes and decorative objects line the shelves at Kasbah Collective. We perused the unique selection of ceramics, jewelry, housewares and clothing. My traveling companion fell in love with a pair of green leopard-print babouches (slippers) and a silk jacket with appliquéd flowers. If I’d had room in my suitcase, I would have purchased one of the enormous fig-scented candles in a handmade earthenware pot. Closed Monday.

An art gallery, concept store and café, Las Chicas was our favorite shopping destination in Tangier. The first floor has high-end esoteric fashions for men and women, including colorful plaid frocks, gorgeous cashmere capes and delicate silk shirts with imaginative silhouettes. I also appreciated the array of vintage travel posters and the delicious selection of perfumes and candles (the home fragrances from Botanika were particularly entrancing). Upstairs is a small café, along with various gift items, including teas, accessories and children’s clothing. Closed Sunday.
