Traveling is a great excuse to go shopping. I pride myself on being an excellent gift giver, and I take pleasure in finding keepsakes that will make friends smile, whether it’s top-notch luggage and travel gear or unique handicrafts from far-flung corners of the globe.
Our website has a range of hand-selected items that would make enviable presents at any time of year. As of this writing, you’ll find chic aluminum luggage from FPM Milano, exquisite chocolates from Vosges Haut-Chocolat and top-quality Manni olive oil beloved by Michelin-starred chefs. And of course, you can buy our annually updated Andrew Harper Collection guidebooks as well as gift memberships.
Below, we’ve put together additional ideas for the holiday season. You’ll find a few of the items I’ll be giving (or hoping to receive) this year, including vacation essentials, home décor and cookbooks.
My go-to travel accessory — especially for chilly flights — is a scarf. I often get compliments on one I brought back from Guatemala. If you don’t have plans to visit Central America soon, consider this example from Cultural Cloth, an excellent source for fair-trade textiles. This eye-catching scarf is made from lightweight bamboo fabric, making it easy to pack and wearable in a range of temperatures.
On a recent trip to Venice, I discovered Laguna~B, a gallery in Dorsoduro. The colorful glassware on display put a contemporary spin on classic Venetian styles. I particularly love the colorful Berlingot line, which makes a great gift for those who love to entertain.
After sampling fine African food on my travels, I always return lamenting the fact that there are so few African restaurants at home. “The Contemporary African Kitchen: Home Cooking Recipes From the Leading Chefs of Africa,” by Alexander Smalls and Nina Oduro, is an excellent present for home cooks inspired by global cuisine. With 120 recipes from all over the continent, this book highlights Africa’s creativity and diverse cultures. I know I’ll be gifting it in the hope that I’m invited over for dinner one night.
Racquet sports are having their moment, and as an avid tennis player, I’m quite pleased that the sport’s heightened pop-culture status has precipitated a boom in stylish gear. This raffia tote from Mark & Graham is an excellent alternative to typical nylon carriers — and it’s stylish enough to use as a carry-on for trips where you want to bring your own stick.
There’s just something about a great hotel robe. At Blackberry Farm in Tennessee, I discovered one of my favorites, which has become a go-to gift for the leisure lovers in my life. This luxurious cashmere robe brings the feeling of an indulgent spa day to the everyday.
While I love a plush hotel robe, I can never abide the flimsy disposable slippers. These fair-trade slides from Kyrgies are handmade in Kyrgyzstan using wool from local sheep farms. They come in handy for the hotel spa, fireside lounging during a ski trip and long plane rides.
One whiff of orange blossom takes me right back to my first trip to Istanbul. The intoxicating scent is one of my favorites, though it tends to be a bit hard to find. That’s why I was so thrilled to discover Diptyque’s Fleur d’Oranger scent on a recent stay at the Four Seasons Hotel at Sultanahmet in Istanbul. Diptyque’s Hourglass Diffuser gently delivers the subtly spicy scent of orange trees.
Cocktail hour is always more lively with a round of backgammon. This glamorous wooden set from Aspinal of London is wrapped in crocodile-stamped leather with matching leather dice cups. As a bonus, the set can be monogrammed.
This retro pocket-size camera from Fujifilm instantly prints photos, making it more fun to share snapshots of people you meet while traveling. I find a camera like this especially helpful when I visit folks who lack easy access to smartphones or the internet — I give them portraits of themselves. This is also a great gift for those who might enjoy a break from their phone while on vacation (i.e., anyone).
“Literary Journeys: Mapping Fictional Travels Across the World of Literature” can’t help but engender some wanderlust. The book traces the journeys at the center of literary classics — from “The Odyssey” to “On the Road” — in over 75 essays from writers and critics, edited by John McMurtrie. Whether you’re shopping for an avid explorer or an armchair traveler, this new release is sure to entertain.
It’s a little out of the box perhaps, but that’s what makes Andrew Harper auction packages one of my favorite things to gift. I’ve purchased a trip to Thailand for family and a weekend in Madrid for friends. Right now, our Flash Sale includes packages to compelling places around the world — for up to 80% off — and they can be combined with other hotel stays and experiences to round out the perfect trip. Note that from now until the end of the year, when you gift one of these “Buy Now” packages to a non-Andrew Harper member, they’ll also receive a complimentary one-year digital membership — giving them access to our luxury travel recommendations to make the most of their trip.
