Manhattan’s electric energy needs no introduction, but too often the rest of New York state lies quietly in the metropolis’s shadow. Nevertheless, it is full of rewards for the traveler who seeks them, from wineries in the Finger Lakes to the painterly panoramas of the Hudson Valley.
East of the city, Long Island reveals many charms, including world-class wineries, picturesque lighthouses, golden-sand beaches and the extravagant summer homes of the Hamptons. Follow the Hudson River north past the Bronx and Yonkers, and the scene quickly changes to pastoral vistas with charming waterfront towns, grand historic estates, spectacular autumn foliage and numerous antiques and art dealers. Farther upstate, the mountainous Adirondack region contains hundreds of lakes and trails and several luxury resorts.
