The oldest capital city in the United States, Santa Fe is rich in history, culture and artistic heritage. It is home to the oldest church in the continental U.S., the San Miguel Chapel, which dates to the early 1600s, as well as the acclaimed Santa Fe Opera and an enormous array of outstanding art galleries and museums. The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum is a standout among them. So often the subject of O’Keeffe’s paintings, adobe is the predominant architectural style here, and it defines much of Santa Fe’s character. A fine example is the Palace of the Governors, built in 1610. Today it’s the site of a popular open-air market where Native American artisans sell quality turquoise jewelry, silverwork and other traditional wares. Santa Fe has also earned a reputation as a culinary destination, celebrated for its creative use of ingredients grown and produced in the American Southwest. With relatively moderate summers and winters cold enough for skiing, Santa Fe is a year-round favorite for travelers.
