Gstaad is located at 3,400 feet in the German-speaking section of the canton of Bern in southwestern Switzerland. It offers one of the largest ski areas in the Alps. The middle of the village is a car-free zone, where the famous promenade is lined with glamorous shops and restaurants. Gstaad is the winter home of the Institut Le Rosey, the oldest private boarding school in Switzerland (est. 1880) and the so-called “School of Kings.” In summer, the Gstaad Menuhin Festival for classical music attracts visitors from around the world. Although a very fashionable ski destination, with more than 130 miles of groomed trails, Gstaad still has the character of an unspoiled Alpine village.
