Swedish Lapland is a vast Arctic expanse of mountains, forests, lakes and wild rivers stretching across the northernmost part of the country. The small city of Luleå, on the Bothnian Bay, is the gateway to the region. Nearby, the UNESCO-listed town of Gammelstad has more than 400 traditional cottages clustered around a medieval stone church. Inland, the scenery gives way to vast boreal forests and the broad Lule River. From the small village of Harads, travelers can enjoy cultural excursions and outdoor adventures, including herb-foraging workshops, horseback-riding, dogsledding and visits to Sámi reindeer herders, depending on the season. In winter, snow and ice transform the landscape as temperatures regularly drop below zero and auroras dance across the dark sky. Summer brings vibrant greenery and the midnight sun, bathing the hills and valleys in near-continuous daylight.
