The dual-island nation of St. Kitts and Nevis lies roughly 50 miles west of Antigua. St. Kitts holds a central place in the colonial history of the Caribbean, the British having made their first settlement here in 1624. Brimstone Hill Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the largest citadel ever built in the Lesser Antilles. The two principal attractions of neighboring Nevis are tranquility and natural beauty. The island has few restaurants and little in the way of shopping or nightlife, and its beaches are unremarkable. Alexander Hamilton was born on Nevis in 1755 and immigrated to the United States in 1772 to pursue his education.
