One might expect places like France, Italy and California to dominate this list, but in 2024, we enjoyed several exciting tastings in more-unexpected locations. We also branched out from wine and even from alcohol. The following venues provided the most memorable tasting experiences of the year, whether they served Merlot, mezcal or mate.

Vanilla at the Vanillerie

An unexpected tasting session during our Hawaiian trip was at the Vanillerie, a small vanilla farm a short drive from Kona’s airport. Here, we had the chance to witness firsthand the intensive process required to produce this aromatic product, second only to saffron as the world’s costliest spice. Under the knowledgeable direction of our guide, we toured shaded greenhouses packed with vanilla vines and ended with a tasting of vanilla-infused seasonings and artisanal foods. The spoonful of vanilla-macadamia-nut honey was divine, and the irresistible homemade vanilla-bean ice cream was even more enjoyable topped with freshly cracked vanilla pepper.
