Five Recommended Hikes in Bhutan

Prayer wheel on the trail up to the temple complex - Andrew Harper editor

Thanks to its spectacular mountain valleys, which are generally unspoiled by the uglier aspects of modernity, Bhutan is a hiker’s paradise. The landscapes alone are impressive, but the addition of cliffside monasteries, old farmhouses and fortified temples makes them utterly breathtaking.

“Breathtaking” can also describe the feeling of a strenuous hike at a high altitude. Those accustomed to being more down to earth would be wise to spend a day or two acclimating to the thinner air before attempting the more difficult paths.

That said, my traveling companion and I — not exactly fitness fiends or hard-core hikers — managed (and greatly enjoyed) every trail we attempted. It helped that our guide carried all the water and snacks! Five favorite hikes are detailed below.
