Although we are always in search of new hotels, we also realize the importance of returning to places that we have recommended for years. Levels of service and maintenance can change all too quickly. And, truth be told, returning to classic Harper properties is usually a duty that proves to be a pleasure. Such was the case on this trip to the Italian Lakes.
The Grand Hotel a Villa Feltrinelli is situated on the western shore of Lake Garda, tucked between a towering cliff and the water. This 20-room resort has racked up both Readers’ and Editors’ Choice awards in past years. As it had been more than a decade since our last visit — during which time the property was acquired by new ownership — it was long overdue for a fresh review.
A switchback of a driveway led down to the neo-Gothic main villa, built in 1892, shielded from the primary road by trees and distance. We briefly sat by the antique desk in the ornate entry hall to complete check-in formalities, discovering that we had received an upgrade to the Boat House. This accommodation, the property’s largest, was a four-minute walk from the main building, so we were transferred there by golf cart.
