Portland’s Pearl District, the neighborhood just north of downtown, is home to Powell’s Books and the Lan Su Chinese Garden, as well as several impressive art galleries. Of these, my favorite was art-glass gallery Bullseye Projects, housed in a former fish-processing factory. On the dimly lit second floor, spotlit works glow in both the main chamber and several smaller side rooms. The bright ground level has a more traditional feel, with exposed brick and wood floors. It was fascinating to chat with curator Michael Endo about the various works, some of which I never would have guessed were glass. I was especially taken by the fabriclike works of Ligia Bouton and the delicate, paperlike geometric pieces of Nisha Bansil. Part of the space is dedicated to glass-making workshops.
