Winery tours can start to feel repetitive. How many stainless-steel fermentation tanks do you really need to see? But the venues in Montenegro that my traveling companion and I visited really stood out. All three had breathtakingly scenic locations and ranges of commendable bottlings. Plus, each one offered an intimate, personalized experience.

Montenegro has only one major winery, Plantaže, and the rest are small, family-run operations. The following all offered memorable tastings. Make reservations in advance if possible.

A short drive from the recommended One&Only Portonovi resort, this winery stands near a monastery of the same name. We had the luck to visit on a mild, sunny day, when the hillside terrace was at its most inviting. A staff member showed us to an umbrella-shaded table on its corner, from which we had stupendous views of Boka Bay and the emerald slopes that border it. I can think of few wineries anywhere in the world that offer a comparable vista.
