Rhine Gold: A Riverside Cruise to Remember

Stolzenfels Castle, Rhine river Germany

River cruises often get stereotyped as dull, with basic cabins, uninspired buffets, cookie-cutter itineraries and an unlively clientele. Too many vessels offer exactly that, but my eight-day voyage along the Rhine aboard the sleek Riverside Debussy shattered the mold. My traveling companion and I connected with a vibrant mix of fellow guests over delicious meals, and we discovered hidden gems during thoughtfully crafted excursions.

Riverside Luxury Cruises arranged for a private car to whisk us from the Rosewood Amsterdam to the ship. The crew welcomed us with refreshing towelettes and chilled flutes of sparkling wine. Marco, our designated butler, balanced professionalism with warmth and humor, and by the time he showed us our Riverside Suite, he and I had already bonded over a couple of shared interests.

The floor-to-ceiling panoramic window fronting the bed was the highlight of the room. With the press of a button, the top half descended, and another button activated an insect screen. Our 258-square-foot accommodation also featured a spacious walk-in closet and a marble-lined bath with underfloor heating, along with a glass-enclosed rain shower with impressive water pressure. The binoculars and complimentary bottle of Champagne on ice were thoughtful touches. This stateroom looked more like a chic hotel suite than a traditional riverboat cabin, and we happily settled in.
