I’ve worked with our Travel Office advisors on countless undercover trips of my own, because it’s quite possible that they’ve been to a destination more recently than I have. They take their role seriously, regularly staying in and inspecting notable hotels, and they always come back with valuable information about new and already recommended properties. Plus, since they make local contacts who can provide insider experiences, the editorial team counts on our advisors to arrange captivating excursions with top guides (in addition to arranging Harper-member hotel perks). I highly recommend that you rely on them as well — it saves a lot of time and results in much more interesting itineraries. Here are updates about some of our advisors’ recent and upcoming travels.
We began our memorable journey through Portugal in Lisbon, followed by visits to the Douro Valley and Porto. The capital offers a plethora of activities, but our private gastronomic tour was a real highlight. We can also organize this chef-led experience for you, of course. Taste local cheeses and cured meats, sip on Ginja (a traditional sour-cherry-based liqueur) and savor the city’s best pastel de nata, a Portuguese custard tart first made by monks in the 18th century. Also not to be missed is a fado performance. The fado singing at the main restaurant of the Valverde Hotel in Lisbon, where we stayed, was delightful.
In the Douro Valley, we had an excellent time at the Six Senses property and explored a small yet fascinating wine museum after a day of wine tasting. We highly recommend a cruise down the Douro River and can help you select the best boat to suit your preferences. Our last stop was Porto, where we overnighted at The Yeatman hotel. While we loved a fascinating guided walking tour, exploring the city’s many shops and restaurants on our own was also great fun! For those seeking authentic souvenirs, we have top-notch recommendations for boutiques selling high-quality local goods, including ceramic products, regionally crafted soaps and lotions and wallets and purses made from cork.
