Illuminating Hotel Stays in Charleston

Lobby, The Pinch - Matthew Williams

I never pass up the chance to visit beautiful Charleston. With its colorful collection of centuries-old homes enhanced by wrought-iron balconies and lush gardens, South Carolina’s largest city evokes the romance of New Orleans. Like that storied destination, Charleston has a rich culinary tradition all its own and an ever-growing roster of award-winning restaurants. Along the cobblestone streets, its complicated history still feels palpable.

Though many visitors give the Holy City only a few days’ time, Charleston rewards a longer stay with its world-class art and history museums, lively markets, scenic waterfront and upscale local shops. The opening of a few luxury hotels gave me more than enough reason to return, and I had the Travel Office make some reservations.

The Loutrel

The 50-room Loutrel seemed to have a lot going for it. Opened in 2021, it stands in a central French Quarter location and is owned by the same group that runs The Spectator Hotel, a property I have recommended since 2019. I researched dozens of hotels in Charleston, and The Loutrel’s consistently high ratings, many awards from the travel press and appealing website persuaded me to try it.
