The Hudson Valley was always the affordable anti-Hamptons for New Yorkers in the know. But recent years have seen it become much more popular — and less affordable — with a proliferation of luxury properties catering to out-of-state visitors and well-heeled New Yorkers. In fact, The Maker, a hotel in the small city of Hudson, earned a spot in our 2022 Editors’ Choice Awards. On this trip, we headed to the countryside.
About two hours from Manhattan, Wildflower Farms, a part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, has 65 cabins on 140 acres of fields, meadows and woods. Despite its location on the outer edges of commuter territory, the property feels refreshingly rural, especially against the backdrop of Shawangunk Ridge. We arrived in the early afternoon, checking in at the main lodge (home to the spa, boutique, restaurant and Great Porch, whose fire pit serves as the unofficial lobby-bar). Unfortunately, to get to and from our Meadow Cottage, we had to cross a parking lot. Some of the charm faded each time I walked to and from our accommodations over the asphalt.
Our 650-square-foot Meadow Cottage was bright, clean and spacious, with light wood paneling and midcentury furniture. I loved the homey details like the wood stove and the patchwork quilt on the king bed. It faced sliding glass doors to the deck and the forest beyond, giving the illusion of total privacy even though other cabins were just a few feet away.
