Most people know that Grenada is the Caribbean’s “Spice Island,” famous for its nutmeg, cinnamon and cocoa exports. But other important facts about the place — the best times to go, holidays that may affect travel — might be less familiar. Here are helpful tips for the first-time visitor.

Getting there: Located in the Eastern Caribbean, Grenada is the southernmost Windward Island. While many airlines fly there, most don’t fly nonstop. Two that do are American Airlines from Miami (and Charlotte, seasonally) and JetBlue from Boston and New York’s JFK.

Beaches: The beaches in Grenada are all open to the public, even those fronting resorts, but that hasn’t ever detracted from our experience. The most popular are Grand Anse, Magazine and Bathway. All but two others are situated at the south end of the island, where the luxury properties are located.
