Winter Mountain View Inspires Writer's Creative Work

My editorial team and I love getting questions from Andrew Harper members. Our Travel Office is full of expert advisors, of course, but we’re also happy to provide guidance and recommendations ourselves. You can write to us at [email protected]. Here are a few particularly interesting questions we recently received.

What are some fabulous destinations that are still unspoiled?

Tropea panoramic coastline and castle, Calabria, Italy

Finding undertouristed places isn’t as easy as it used to be, but they certainly exist. In red-hot Japan, tourists confine themselves mostly to Tokyo, Kyoto and Hakone. The gorgeous island of Hokkaido remains almost pristine, and it now has several lovely hotels. Bhutan has a constellation of stunning lodges, and though its popularity is increasing, it remains uncrowded and culturally intact. Otherworldly Namibia has managed tourism with aplomb. It presents awe-inspiring landscapes as well as exciting safari opportunities. Even Italy has pockets. Calabria is sensationally scenic and far cheaper than the Amalfi Coast or Sicily, for example.

Where’s the best place for a holiday ski vacation (that has guaranteed snow)?

Pool, Amangani, Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Only a few places can guarantee actually good snow in December. Matterhorn Glacier Paradise near Zermatt is one; in fact, it offers skiing year-round! Niseko, on the aforementioned island of Hokkaido, almost always has early-season powder. If those places don’t appeal, consider a ski destination that offers other diversions, in case of bad snow luck. I love the charming Wild West atmosphere of Telluride, Colorado (and Dunton Hot Springs, an hour away). Near Sun Valley, Idaho, the small town of Ketchum is filled with art galleries and restaurants worthy of national acclaim, and the mountain is known for its high-tech snowmaking equipment. But my favorite is Jackson Hole, Wyoming, from which you can explore nearby Grand Teton National Park and even make a jaunt to Yellowstone. Plus, lively Jackson punches above its weight with nightlife and shopping. (And in my experience, the mountain usually has plenty of snow by Christmas.)
