Great things come in pairs, as someone might once have said, and four notable hotel brands are doubling down on Italy. Six Senses, Rocco Forte, Rosewood and Egnazia Ospitalità Italiana each have plans to open (or reopen) two luxury hotels there. And of course, a variety of other promising properties have recently debuted or are in the works for 2025.
One family member recently told me that she felt no need to go back to Italy, having “already seen it.” I couldn’t help but laugh. I don’t know anyone who has seen the entirety of that large and exceedingly varied country, which encompasses everything from snowy Alpine peaks to warm Mediterranean islands. I keep discovering new delights myself, despite having long ago lost count of how many visits I’ve made. Fortunately for us editors, new hotels keep giving us excuses to return.
We currently recommend 10 hotels in Tuscany (not including those in Florence) but only three properties in neighboring Umbria, a similarly beautiful region that’s likewise speckled with picturesque hill towns, old forests and high-quality vineyards. So the upcoming Six Senses Antognolla, centered on a 12th-century castle, offers a welcome addition, encompassing 71 guest rooms, as well as 79 residences for sale. The 1,335-acre property will also include a golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., a kids’ club and an expansive spa, among other amenities. About a half hour from Perugia, this resort also serves as a fine location for excursions. It was originally scheduled to open in 2024, but unfortunately, the debut has now been pushed back to 2026.
