The Andean Highlands of Ecuador runs down the center of the country, splitting apart the coast and the rainforest. The region showcases the majestic Andes Mountains, verdant valleys, snowcapped mountains and imposing volcanoes. Nestled in the lush terrain, rural villages specializing in handmade crafts and colorful fabrics — including the town of Zuleta, which is famous for its intricate embroidery — are fine stopping points. The abundance of nature reserves, crisscrossed with hiking, biking and horseback-riding trails and dotted with bird-watching platforms, makes this area a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. The weather in the region tends to offer sun in the mornings and rain in the afternoons, and the temperature can drop in the evenings. The best time to visit is during the dry season, which runs from June through September.
