Our recommended hotel on West 44th Street, The Chatwal, at the edge of Manhattan’s Theater District, is scheduled to acquire a sibling next April. However, the new property will be utterly dissimilar to its art deco forebear, which was designed by Stanford White in 1905. In contrast, The Chatwal Lodge, 100 miles northwest of New York City, will comprise lavish but rustic suites, set next to a 1,000-acre lake, on a 30-acre preserve in the Catskills. The most distinctive of the accommodations will be a pine-and-cedar treehouse, with an outdoor deck raised 25 feet off the ground.

Although deep in the woods, guests are unlikely to suffer, as The Chatwal Lodge will provide 24-hour in-suite dining, plus butler, valet and concierge services. And accommodations will come with reclaimed wood walls, hand-carved headboards, soaking tubs, stone fireplaces, and faux fur and alpaca throws. The resort’s main building will contain a farm-to-table restaurant, a private dining room and a wine cellar. Ayurvedic wellness treatments will be available, along with meditation and yoga classes. Outdoor activities will include boating, hiking, horseback riding and fly-fishing on the property’s mile-long private stretch of trout stream.
