Cape Town and its hinterlands count among my favorite places to dine out in the world. Many restaurants have compelling views, perhaps of the harbor, mountains and/or vineyards. All of them have access to high-quality local produce, unique indigenous ingredients, perfectly fresh seafood and superlative wines made nearby. And not least important, prices are startingly low as of this writing, thanks in part to the current strength of the dollar. To prepare, I recommend packing billowing linen shirts and pants with elastic waistbands.

Goat cheese mille-feuille with celery root-onion chutney, butternut squash and wild rosemary sauce, Beyond - Andrew Harper editor

Acclaimed chef Peter Tempelhoff opened Beyond in late 2020 in Constantia, a historic wine region that’s about a half-hour drive south from central Cape Town. We went for an à la carte lunch to take full advantage of the magnificent view of mountain ridges and vineyards out the dining room’s floor-to-ceiling windows. A local sparkling wine with oysters from Saldanha Bay, just north of Cape Town, made for a delightful start. I thought I was being healthful by ordering a vegetarian appetizer, but the soft and crunchy goat cheese mille-feuille with wild rosemary and roasted and puréed butternut squash felt as decadent as any meat dish. Almost: My main of slow-cooked pork belly, mustard-coated pear cubes and a cream of parsnip and pap (traditional corn porridge) upped the ante. Our amiable server proved well-informed about the wine options and suggested tasty pairings. I expected Beyond’s view to overshadow the food, but I’d happily eat here even if I faced a brick wall. Closed Sunday dinner and Monday.
