Ubud, the cultural capital of Bali, is a rich tapestry of ancient temples and modern art galleries. While the small town can feel hectic and traffic-clogged at times, it’s well worth a day of exploring to discover the unique art and architecture of the region, either on your own or with a guide arranged by the Travel Office.
Ubud is filled with beautifully designed temples of all sizes. Ubud Palace (Puri Saren Agung) is an intricately carved masterpiece designed by I Gusti Nyoman Lempad, a Balinese architect and sculptor. The structure has been the official residence of the royal family of Ubud since the 1800s. Wander through the lush courtyards and pavilions, noting the ornate architectural details and Hindu sculptures. In the evenings, Ubud Palace hosts traditional dance performances.
Also consider visiting the nearby Ubud Water Palace (Pura Taman Saraswati), a sculptural temple dedicated to Sarasvati, the Hindu goddess of knowledge. I particularly appreciated the serenity of its setting, which is surrounded by fountains.
