The first Aman resort, Amanpuri, opened in Thailand in 1988, on a hillside overlooking the Andaman Sea. It was intended to be a sanctuary, a place of calm and aesthetic refinement. Other resorts followed, in Bali at first and then elsewhere in Asia. But the formula was the same: exquisite pavilions, with Zen-inspired interiors, set in pristine natural surroundings. The group’s first new city hotel was Aman Tokyo, which debuted in 2014. The ethos hadn’t changed, but now the jungle was urban. Aman’s latest attempt to create an oasis of serenity in a major city, Aman New York, opened in August.

Housed within the 1921 Crown Building, on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street, it has a Japanese-inspired interior, the work of longtime Aman architect Jean-Michel Gathy. The 83 suites, none smaller than 745 square feet, come with oak floors, gas fires and enormous baths. The accommodations are complemented by Italian and Japanese restaurants, a 2,300-square-foot spa, a year-round garden terrace and a jazz club. The only catch is that the new Aman’s rates are multiples of its nearest competitors. Having acquired a taste for city life, Aman’s next urban project is Aman Miami Beach, located at Collins and 35th Street, a 56-key property that is scheduled to debut in 2024.
