AWAY from the CROWDS
Over the last 20 years, we’ve seen the Indonesian island of Bali transformed by ever-increasing tourism. Fortunately, this Hindu enclave retains plenty of the extraordinary unspoiled landscapes that made it famous: hillsides covered in rice terraces, misty green mountains, dramatic sea cliffs. We paid anonymous visits to two jungle hideaways and a glamorous coastal resort. Barcelona, too, has its troubles with crowds, but we evaded them by staying in an upscale neighborhood just northwest of the busy center. And we escaped from Manhattan to a tranquil retreat in the Hudson Valley. Look also for a review of the new Explora I cruise ship and a roundup of the most exciting recent luxury hotel openings.
