Authentic, honest reviews, since 1979

For over 40 years, our anonymous editors have traveled the globe incognito to discover exceptional hideaways and experiences for Andrew Harper members.

“The idea for this newsletter back in 1979 — to share information about peaceful and unspoiled sanctuaries with a limited and compatible group of sophisticated travelers — remains at the core of its identity today.”
“Over the years, I have stayed in tens of thousands of hotel rooms; The Artist probably ranks among my top 100.”
“For me, some African rivers, flowing through wild untouched landscapes seem to create a connection to the ancient past, a time when the human species was in its infancy.”

The best of the year

Despite everything, in 2021 we still found a surprising number of seductive hideaways that met our demanding criteria.

Southeast Asia

Americans have obvious reason to be curious about Vietnam, and most return from their visits stirred by the beauty of the landscape and the generosity of their hosts. Hotels and resorts in Vietnam have attained a commendable level of excellence.
The people of Thailand are consistently charming, the food is unfailingly delicious, and orchids grow like weeds. Few cities contain finer hotels than Bangkok. Cambodia has emerged as a destination in its own right. This romantic oceanfront hideaway set amid lush gardens on 1,500 acres of nature reserve is midway between Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo. Seven colorful villas contain 16 suites with a contemporary Mexican-chic décor, breezy terraces and original paintings and sculptures from artisans across Mexico.
